Best Version by 50: The System I Built to Reinvent Myself
THE DREAM JOB
In October 2021, I started designing for the Detroit Pistons. My childhood team. A dream job.
For three NBA seasons, I lived alone in Detroit six months a year. On site during the season. Remote in the off-season, back home in Florida.
It was the first time in my life I lived by myself.
STARTING FROM THE FLOOR
In July 2022, before my second season, I had knee surgery. And hernia surgery.
I needed a walker to cross my own bedroom.
Bad food. Alcohol. Too little water. Poor sleep. Broken habits, stacked one on top of the other.
I was living my dream. My body wasn't ready to enjoy it.
THE TURNING POINT AT 42
I was 42. The kind of moment that makes you look at everything. My body. My money. My mind. My faith. How I showed up for people.
I didn't like all of what I saw. I was repeating the same pattern. Not taking care of myself. Day after day.
The worst part wasn't the inconsistency. It was the loss of trust. When you break promises to yourself, you don't just lose progress. You lose self-respect.
So I made a decision. Now or never. Reinvent myself. Not in a weekend. For as long as it takes.
IT DIDN'T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT
I tried. I slipped. I tried again.
Each attempt removed one habit that hurt me, or replaced it with one that served me. Some stuck. Many didn't.
Living alone helped. The isolation became a training ground. No one to perform for. Just me and the work.
I went looking for knowledge. Good books. Documentaries. Teachers of the mind and the spirit. Joe Dispenza. The Silva Method. The Hermetica. And many more.
Slowly, the old script lost its grip.
SIX SHEETS OF PAPER ON A WALL
In my third season, I put it all on paper. A 100-day challenge.
I printed six sheets. One per realm: Spiritual, Fitness, Health, Finances, Intellect, Presence.
Each sheet had three commitments. And a grid of 100 days.
Some commitments were simple:
•Meditate every day.
•Drink 2 liters of water.
•At least 20 minutes of cardio.
•Read one chapter on weekdays.
•Train with the sword.
•Keep my posture. Be impeccable with my words.
Next to each sheet, a vision board. Heroes I grew up with. Fighters who trained when nobody was watching.
At the top, I wrote one rule: "Don't make it public until the end. The focus is on me."
GREEN CHECKS AND RED X'S
Every night I marked the day. Green check. Red X.
Some weeks were all green. Some had more red than I want to admit. The paper didn't care. It just showed the truth.
That's when I learned the first lesson: harsh truth without love becomes poison.
I stopped using the wall to punish myself. I started using it as a mirror.
FROM CHECKBOXES TO SCORES
Checkboxes had a problem. A rushed 10-minute workout and a full session got the same check.
So I moved to a spreadsheet. I called it "Hero's Journal." I scored every habit from 1 to 5. Every day. Then I averaged the month.
Patterns showed up fast. Water was always a 5. The gym was a 5. Gratitude was all over the place.
Every week, I filled out a Wheel of Life. Six realms. One snapshot. Today it's the Weekly HUD.
That ritual became the weekly review. The 1–5 scale became 0–100. The six sheets became the six realms. The wall became an app.
WHAT CHANGED (AND WHAT DIDN'T)
What changed:
•I stopped negotiating with myself.
•I stopped waiting for the perfect mood.
•My body changed. From a walker to the best shape of my life.
What didn't change:
•Life still got chaotic.
•Emotions still showed up.
•I still slipped.
The difference: I came back faster.
WHY 50
I started at 42. I'm 47 now. Three years to go.
If I keep replacing bad habits with good ones, consistently, I'll reach 50 at my peak. Spirit. Body. Health. Money. Mind. Character.
That's my main goal. My motivation.
Your goal will be different. Your story will be different. Mine is just proof that the system works when you work it.
